Since the legalization of pot (cannabis) in Canada, the Quebec government has taken a number of steps to tighten the law. Some of these new rules came into force recently. This article discusses the new legal age limit, whether smoking pot is allowed in public places, and the sale of edibles.
The new legal age for buying pot is 21
On January 1, the legal age for buying pot was raised from 18 to 21. This means people under the age of 21 aren’t allowed to buy or possess pot, no matter what the amount. Also, it’s illegal for a person 21 or older to buy pot for someone under 21.
Parents can possess pot at home
Individuals 21 years and older are allowed to possess pot at home, even if they live with people under 21. Therefore, parents with children under 21 can possess pot at home. But if the children are minors, the parents must keep the pot in a place that’s not readily accessible.
Smoking pot in public places is now illegal
In November 2019, it became illegal to smoke pot in public places in Quebec. You can’t smoke pot on the street, on sidewalks, in parks, in public squares, on bike paths or in any other place to which the public has access. . The minimum fine for an offence is $500.
Note: Municipalities can adopt bylaws allowing the smoking of pot in certain parks. In Montreal, for example, the boroughs can decide whether pot can be smoked on their territory.
Uncertainty about growing pot at home
According to the website of the Quebec government, it’s illegal to grow pot at home. But a court struck down this restriction and ruled that a person is allowed to grow up to four marijuana plants at home. The government is appealing this judgment. So, there’s still much uncertainty about whether pot can be grown at home.
Most edibles are still illegal
Some edibles, such as ready-to-drink beverages and infusions, can now be sold in Quebec. However, it’s illegal to sell products that could be appealing to children. As a result, the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) can’t sell gummies, candy, chocolate and other sweets.
