In Quebec, a transgender person can have gender reassignment surgery and treatments free of charge through the public health insurance plan.
To qualify for this type of care, some conditions must be met. These are a few of them:
- The person must live in Quebec and be registered with Quebec’s public health insurance plan (RAMQ).
- A doctor must determine that the surgeries or treatments are necessary.
- The person must provide several documents, including at least one evaluation by a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist.
Purely esthetic care is not included, such as surgery to make the person’s face look more feminine or breast implants.
Lastly, the surgeries and treatments must be given in a private clinic chosen by the government (GRS Montreal).
