Changes have been made to the law on labour standards. Here are five of them, with the dates they take effect.

1 – Annual vacation

Workers will have three weeks’ paid vacation after three years working for the same employer, instead of five years.

Takes effect January 1, 2019.

2 – Psychological harassment

Acts of sexual harassment are now included in the definition of psychological harassment. Workers now have two years, instead of just 90 days, to file a complaint with the CNESST (labour standards, pay equity and workplace health and safety board).

In effect since June 12, 2018.

All employers must have a policy to prevent psychological harassment and deal with complaints.

Takes effect January 1, 2019.

3 – Time off when a loved one dies

Workers will have five days off, two of which are paid, instead of just one day.

Takes effect January 1, 2019.

4 – Payment by bank transfer

Employers no longer need their workers’ agreement to pay them by bank transfer.

In effect since June 12, 2018.

5 – Time off for family reasons

“Family” is given a broader definition. It now includes, for example, the family of your spouse or partner, foster families and some caregivers.

In effect since June 12, 2018.
