The Quebec government has made working from home mandatory for many people. Did you know that the same labour standards apply to you even if you’re working from home?

Workplace accidents or harassment

Even if you’re working from home, you’re protected by the same labour standards laws as before. So, if you have an accident while working outside the office, you could be compensated. You’re also protected against workplace sexual harassment and psychological harassment.

Time off work and vacation

When you work from home you have a right to the same time off and vacation days as when you went in to work. You are, in fact, ‘at work’ even though you’re not in your usual workspace.

If you must miss work don’t forget to tell your employer. Tell them why you’ll be absent and for how long. Your employer can ask you for a medical certificate to confirm your state of health and to justify your absence.

Time off due to COVID-19

You can’t be let go or disciplined for missing work because you must self-isolate due to COVID-19. How long you must take off work depends on your vaccine status and whether you’re a healthcare worker. For an overview of the different isolation periods (French only), visit the website of the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST or labour standards, pay equity and workplace health and safety board).
